Chapter Twenty-Two

B reakfast was as hearty as the ale from the night before. Fried bread, fried tomatoes, fried bacon and fried mushrooms graced a large plate surrounded by a decorative ring of heavily seasoned mashed potatoes.

“My wife’s specialty. Eat up, you are paying for it in the price of your room,” the innkeeper said.

Every part of the dish appealed to Ricky. He’d have to remember it, for he thought it was the best breakfast he had consumed since the Doubli Academy commissary in Tossa.

“Is the wand-maker still in the village?”

“You’ve been here before?” the innkeeper asked.

“A few years ago,” Ricky said. “Vana Rasso showed me around.”

“Lady Vana?”

Ricky nodded.

“He is. Not much has changed.”

The two were alone in the common room. Ricky still looked around. “Do you consider yourself Dimani or Vorrian?” he said quietly.

“Dimani to the core, despite the airs the Rassos put on, telling us otherwise. But please don’t tell them I said so.”

Ricky shook his head and tried to give the man a reassuring smile. “I won’t.”

“I’ll be back to settle up, but first I’d like to walk off this delicious breakfast.”

He ran up to his room and put on his sword and the wand before he walked out of the inn. The morning was pleasantly cool as he strolled through the cobbled streets. Some buildings looked to be in good condition, and others seemed derelict. He sighed but continued on to the craftsman’s shop.

Ricky walked inside, and the same little man with a long beard walked out.

“I have nothing for sale,” he said. “I’m sorry.” He spotted Ricky’s wand case at his hip.

“That is one of mine,” he said, looking at the wand case.

Ricky took out the wand. “I haven’t kept this in very good condition, have I?” he said.

The little sorcerer handed the wand. He squinted his eyes. “You’ve used this.”

“Indeed I have,” Ricky said.

“I remember now. Four gold Falcons.”

Ricky grinned. “That’s me.”

He pointed at Ricky. “So you are the boy performer who killed Ticco Griama?” The man shook his head. “Ticco was bad, going worse,” he said. “You did Dimani a great service.”

“Is Lady Vana around?”

The sorcerer shook his head. “She spends most of her time at Rassoport, the new name for our southern port.” He looked at the wand. “I can’t repair this, you know.”

“I do,” Ricky said, “but I don’t need the script to bring out the blade.”

That brought out a smile. “I thought you had the potential to be a great sorcerer.”

“I am in the Fifth Ring on my Tower project, if you know anything about Duterian sorcery.”

The man beamed. “I know enough to be impressed. So young. Did you come to show me the battered wand?”

Ricky shook his head. “I’m headed to Vorria. I wondered if you wanted to come with me. The person who was supposed to help me didn’t work out.”

“Me? I’m under contract.”

“What would it take to pay out your contract?”

The man went in the back and came out with a document.

“The price is plainly meant to dishearten me every time I see it, 25,000 falcons.
